This month’s speakers are Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian, Multnomah County Deputy DA Greg Moawad, International Justice Mission’s Mike Hogan.
Gregory Moawad is employed as a deputy district attorney in Multnomah County, Oregon . He began with the District Attorney’s office in the early 1990’s. Since that time, he has worked in the Intake, Domestic Violence and Juvenile units. He now works in Unit D, a violent crime units, where he specializes in human trafficking cases.
Brad Avakian is the 9th Commissioner of Labor and Industries in
Oregon’s history. Dedicated to a diverse work force, Brad served for seven years as Honorary Chair of the Oregon Business Leadership Network – a coalition of employers committed to hiring persons with disabilities. In November 2008 he was elected statewide as Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor and Industries, where his top priority is strengthening Oregon’s workforce development system. Brad now also serves as a member of the Oregon Green Jobs Council.
Mike Hogan is the Pacific Northwest Regional Director of Church Mobilization for International Justice Mission. IJM is a human rights agency that secures justice for victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression. IJM lawyers, investigators and aftercare professionals work with local governments to ensure victim rescue, to prosecute perpetrators and to strengthen the community and civic factors that promote functioning public justice systems.

Co-sponsors include Show Mercy International, The Hope Center, and OATH (Oregonians Against Human Trafficking). Each of these organizations will be sharing about their visions and the resources they offer, and also helping to spread awareness. The annual Western States Vice Conference is being hosted by Portland Police Bureau this year from August 23-27th (at noon). The conference will be held at the Portland Hilton. This is for all law enforcement personnel. Speakers include Dr. Sharon Cooper from the movie “Playground” and retired Special Forces Colonel Dr. Bill Hillar. Dr. Hillar has trained many law enforcement and first responders through-out the world including foreign military. He trains DEA, FBI, etc on both human trafficking and drug trafficking, as well as skills such as premeditated leadership, counterterrorism, etc. Workshops will emphasize human trafficking, but will also include stress management and gambling. September 25th – Corvallis. Every year, CASA – Voices for Children offers a fall conference that focuses on needs of at-risk children and how the community might be able to help meet those needs. This years theme is “Teen Realities.” Keith Bickford and Wynne Wakkila will be speakers and OATH is one of the co-sponsors.
October 12th – Coos Bay training and awareness event with Keith Bickford, Chris Killmer, Bill Hillar, and Wynne Wakkila. Co-sponsored by Zonta and OATH.
October 22, 23, and 24th – OATH Human Trafficking conference at PSU. Music, speakers, break-out sessions, tables for organizations, .silent vigil, open mike. Free and open to the public.

Sponsored by Hillsboro and Portland Soroptimists! Local police and fire softball teams compete for a great cause. The Battle of the Badges is a fun-filled day featuring co-ed softball tournaments between police and firefighters from the greater Portland metro area. We are currently looking for teams for this exciting event. Police, firefighters and their family members are eligible to play in our August 28th fundraiser. All proceeds go to the Oregon Human Trafficking Task Force to provide after-rescue care for underage victims of sexual slavery. Have fun while supporting a great cause. Sign up now!

September 22-23: Chicago Child Trafficking and Exploitation Conference
9/25: SARC’s “Walk A Mile in Her Shoes”: The Men’s March to End Sexual Assault and Gender Violence. At 10:00AM on September 25th, 2010, SARC will be holding its fourth annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event. The march is a brilliant excercise in perspective in which men, dedicated to this important cause, will walk a mile in a woman’s shoes. Clad in high heels the men will march a mile through downtown Beaverton to raise awareness about sexual violence and to promote SARC’s free services to the community. The march will begin in city park in downtown Beaverton. Registration begins at 9, marching at 10!

Highlights from Stop Child Trafficking Now:
o 10/09: 1st global SCTnow walk across 39 cities raised $600,000 dollars
o 1/10: $1million dollars and first 4 man cyber team begins work.
o 8/10: In the past 3 months 10 cases of exploitation of children on the internet have been handed over to law divisions.
o Current cyber team is locating an average of 50 online predators a month
